RESEARCH-What makes a good title sequence according to Kyle Cooper?

What makes a good title sequence according to Kyle Cooper?

Kyle Cooper is a title sequence creator and has created the title sequence for superman, spiderman, dawn of the dead and famously the film seven. He has been credited as the man who single handedly revitalised the film title sequence as an art form.

Kyle Cooper's title sequence for seven is a discreet title sequence that moves over. It shows clips of cutting up film and newspapers sowing and writing in a journal with the face never being with only his fingers being in shot. The music used is dark and sinister and the images look quite disturbing and dark this contributes to creating the mood of the film. The Seven title sequence also has handwritten titles this is a subtle way of linking the story with the title sequence as it is about a serial killer who writes in a journal which Cooper feels adds to the mood of the film more and it is integrated with the film so they come as one rather than separate pieces.
Kyle Cooper feels that a good title sequence must set an expectation for the film that is about to be watched and should make the audience forget about everything but the film. He also considers that title sequences should excite the audience for the film to come. He also believes that title sequences should move seamlessly into the film.
Kyle Cooper explained in an interview that his favourite title sequences were from the films Deadzone and To kill a mocking bird. He said he liked Deadzone’s due to its simple typography and the music which is played overtime that made it very mysterious. He said he likes To kill a mocking bird’s title sequence as it captures the main character’s obsession, its beautifully photographed how the marble’s distorted in the background and how the type was in lined with box and marbles so it was integrated and not an afterthought.
He went on in the interview to talk about how the two and a half minutes of the title sequence become important for the studio. He said that the title sequence is important as it becomes another scene for the film and it is a space to put in information that had been left out by the film. He also said the title sequence almost acts like a prologue to a film.
When talking about the title sequence he created for the film Dawn of the dead Cooper said that he tried to create a world full of carnage to build a mini scene going into the film he also help to make a more interesting ending rather than having a happy ending.
