What is the purpose of a title sequence and film opening?
The purpose of a title sequence and film opening is to establish the genre of the film to the audience. It contains various things such as a soundtrack, images and maybe even short clips of the film. All of this goes towards setting the mood of the film for the audience.
It can also contain the setting and main characters so that the audience can get a glimpse of what the film might be about and they'll also know if their favourite actor is taking part. By knowing if their favourite actor is in the movie, this will make them want to watch the film rather than them being disappointed half way through the film. Sometimes there is no setting during the title sequence and film opening but there is music which also helps to establish the genre.
The title sequence or film opening contains things such as the production company, distribution company, establishing shot, title, title credits, soundtrack, narrative (sometimes), characters, images etc.
