What is genre?
Genre - Categorising a particular type of film. It's used as a way to categorise different products that share similar features or characteristics.
Sub-genre - A subdivision of a genre. This means that there is a particular genre but there are aspects of another genre within the film.
Hybrid genre - A genre that blends themes and elements from two or more different genres. A well known hybrid genre is Rom Com (romance + comedy).
Codes & Conventions - Codes: Systems of signs but together to create meaning. Conventions: Habits or long accepted ways of doing things through repeated experiences.
Genre tropes - A common or overused theme or device. Something that is cliché. For example, in horror movies there is always the same soundtrack for when something big is about to happen. Also in Western movies, the character is always dressed in cowboy boots and has a gun in his hand and is riding a horse.
