Genre is simply the way in which films are categorised depending on what type of film they are. Genre is useful for determining what certain codes and conventions that film makers can use to display their film in a certain way to the audience.

A sub-genre is a subdivision of a genre. This means that there is a clear genre that the film is made with but the film also gives elements of a secondary genre for example the film Django unchained is display as and is mainly an action film however at particular moments of the film there is comedy elements so it’s genre is action but it’s sub-genre is comedy.

A hybrid genre is a cross between a number of genre that blend themes and elements. A hybrid genre unlike a sub-genre is incorporating more than one genre in order create a genre of itself. A popular hybrid genre is a romantic comedy this is a hybrid genre as it completely adopts both genres and creates a new one which are now having their own codes and conventions.

Codes and conventions are common ways in which film makers use to represent different themes and elements to create different effects and meaning. Code and conventions in terms of genre are the common ways in which the try to demonstration the genre of the film to the audience.

Genre tropes are overused elements of a genre which are now clichés in films. A genre trope is typical to a certain genre for example in the genre of horror and thriller there is often a haunted house or forest.
