Sequence 1- The Conjuring (Horror-Thriller)
Micro Analysis-
Camera (Shot distance/ Angles/ Movement/ Framing):
There is lots of close up angles to objectify the photos. The way the transitions are made replicates the characteristics of an old film projector. This gives the audience an effect that these photos and newspaper clippings were set in a very old generation giving a basis of how the movie will have something to do with the past.
Editing (Cuts/ Speed/ Special Effects/ Transitions):
The editing consists mostly of different transitions using special effects. This is used when you can see a black silhouette of hands changing some of the images and the turning page effect along with the quick photo switch on the projector effect. Furthermore the black and white and the low saturation of colours used in the photographs gives a dull and thrilling effect.
Mise-en-scene (Location/ Setting/ Costumes/ Make up/ Props/ performance & Lighting):
There isn't a specific location you can identify throughout the sequence but as the opening finishes a picture of the old house that wasn't previously appears again but longer and at a different shot. This shot of the house now contains a hanging rope as the trees creepily frame the house where the Title of the film appears in the middle. This gives the audience a sense that this house is where the movie is going to be based.
Sound (Musical score, sound effects, wild sound, Foley Sound)
Foley sound is the sound created in post production that is enhanced to sound more louder or more realistic. In the opening the first thing you hear is an off tune synth which already makes the audience identify that something wrong is bound to happen. There is no sound track only the repeated synth string sound along with a trombone type sound and added agonising screaming and breathing effects and to create tension and build up suspense.
Macro Analysis-
Key plot idea introduced in the title sequence:
The idea is for the audience to get a sense of how the film is going to be based on something supernatural and to go through the history or be taken on a journey on these supernatural accounts shown in the newspaper clippings. The old photographs used show how old the settings would be for the film e.g. the old house shown in the picture.
Order of storyline introduced:
The opening doesn't exactly produced a storyline only but the order of the images and clippings used show how something bad must have happened to the two families shown at the beginning.
Characters introduced/ When and how:
The main characters of the film are not introduced however in the very beginning of the opening there was two images of two different families. This makes the audience think that they might have previously lived in the house shown throughout the sequence.Social groups represented (How they are represented?- positively, negatively, stereotypically/ use of
binary oppositions):
The photographs of the family look quite wealthy middle class looking considering how old the year might have been when the photographs was taken. You can identify this by looking at the way they are dress and the composition of the photograph. I feel they are represented positively as they look like nice innocent families.
The conventions-
Type of title sequence (Discrete, traditional, stylised or blank screen):
The title sequence was narrative except on a still image. This means you could still tell what the film was going to be about even through using a still image.
Font colours used, type face and size:
Basic thin san serif font in capital letters in either black and white font.
Placements of the title credits (Are they integrated and part of the image or are the clearly separate from the image:
The text changed depending on what the still image in the background was. So if the newspaper clipping was shown there would be an overlap of the title credits on a plain piece of paper cut out placed on top to add to the collection of cut out clippings. This compliments the theme of the chosen effect presented. Other title credits were shown in a contrasting part of the background or image used in either black or white font depending on the background.

Sequence 2- The Shining (Horror-Thriller)
Micro Analysis-
Camera (Shot distance/ Angles/ Movement/ Framing):
Use of continuous landscape shots, establishing shots, extreme long shots and high angle shots with use of short camera panning and following shots of the vehicle that presumably the main characters are in.
Editing (Cuts/ Speed/ Special Effects/ Transitions):
The transitions are mostly all fade ins of the change of scene and landscape setting. They have short durations of these transitions. There is no special effects used.
Mise-en-scene (Location/ Setting/ Costumes/ Make up/ Props/ performance & Lighting):
The setting is shown throughout the whole opening from where the car is coming up to the main location of the brick built building till the end where the building is shown by itself then the shot fades to black.
There is a sound track as soon as the opening starts sounding very tense dramatic and never ending. There is also added sound and sound effects e.g. scream like sounds and cries to make it sound more eerie and full of suspense.
Macro Analysis-
Key plot idea introduced in the title sequence:
The way the car is shot being followed continuously gives the audience an impression that the car is going the wrong way. The amount of empty landscape shots suggests that the place where the characters are going is going to be quite isolated away from a city or crowded place.
Order of storyline introduced:
It first starts with basic long and establishing shots of a remote area then the car appears into shot as the camera gradually gets closer to the car. Then after different surroundings are shot with car the location of where the characters are going to be staying is shown at the end.
Characters introduced/ When and how:
The characters are not officially shown however the car represents a family that is travelling to a destination.
Social groups represented (How they are represented?- positively, negatively, stereotypically/ use of
binary oppositions):
Middle class as the location where the characters are on a decent looking car at the time where the film was made/ set. The building looks quite big and expensive.
The conventions-
Type of title sequence (Discrete, traditional, stylised or blank screen):
Narrative title as you can see where the car is going and the soundtrack gives away the type of genre the film would be. Titles over a moving image is used to give a clear start and intro to the film.
Font colours used, type face and size:
Light blue vibrant thin sans serif font in capitals. Sizes of text are mostly all big to make it really contrast with the background of the film.
Placements of the title credits (Are they integrated and part of the image or are the clearly separate from the image:
Title credits are integrated into the moving image and has use of an text animation where it goes in an upwards motion towards the top of the screen then exits through the top.
Order of title sequence:
- A Stanley Kubrick Film
- Jack Nicholson
- Shelley Duvall
- The Shining
- Actor Features
- Executive Producer
- Based upon the novel by Stephen King
- Produced in association with- The Producer Circle Company
- Screenplay By

Sequence 3- Mimic (Horror-Thriller)
Micro Analysis-
Camera (Shot distance/ Angles/ Movement/ Framing):
Mostly extreme close ups and close ups of the different insects from all types of angles as the shot quickly changes to give an effect as if the insect is moving. At times the framing of where the object is changes into a different sector of the rule of thirds.
Editing (Cuts/ Speed/ Special Effects/ Transitions):
The cut speed of the shots are very fast and frequently changes at times. There are special effects within when the shot transitions to the next shot as it overlays with a blurring transition and uses different filters on the image.
Mise-en-scene (Location/ Setting/ Costumes/ Make up/ Props/ performance & Lighting):
First setting shown is a cold city where it's snowing (looks like New York in winter time). Extracts of insects are continuously shown and needles and other sharp objects stuck in the insects and on paper and photographs. The lighting changes within moving and being bright and dark at times. This gives the audience the effect of strobe lights as the image also continuously changes at different angles.
Sound (Musical score, sound effects, wild sound, Foley Sound)
Sound effects come in along with the ambient sound of wind to go with the cold setting of the city and the snow blowing in the air. There is also more non-diegetic sounds that come in of background people talking over a radio as it's fuzzy. A soundtrack is then introduced with lots of added sound effects to compliment the creepy mood. It gets louder and more tense at times indicating to the audience that something bad is going to happen.
Macro Analysis-
Key plot idea introduced in the title sequence:
The props used (insects) and the way they are portrayed lets the audience know the film is going to be about something scientific as they seem to be sampled when there are pulled apart extracts of the insects shown close up. The way everything is continuously changing gives the plot away of how something is going to drastically change during the film with also the fact that it's called mimic. It gives the thoughts that something is going to be either cloned or copied with the cut up pictures of people is well.
Order of storyline introduced:
Starts off with the setting of where the film is going to take place which is in a popular crowded city. Then goes into an unknown location where insects are kept as there is a person on the radio or tv reporting as if something bad has happened. Photos of people start to appear then later on appear again but cut up and pinned down as if they are victims.
Characters introduced/ When and how:
No specific characters introduced however photos of children appear stuck up on walls.
Social groups represented (How they are represented?- positively, negatively, stereotypically/ use of
binary oppositions):
Working class/ middle class as it looks as if it would associating scientists and other working class people that work within the city. Stereotypically middle class people would normal be the victims in a horror film whilst the working class people often end up finding a solution to stop what is happening.
The conventions-
Type of title sequence (Discrete, traditional, stylised or blank screen):
The title sequence is a narrative with titles over a moving image. With also the incorporation of still images of the photographs used within the sequence.
Font colours used, type face and size:
The font is white/black and quite small and thin in a type writing style to give a reporting effect with an account of the date as if there is going to be a scientific discovery. With each title credit they seem to remain the same size even the title of the film. However you can identify the title as it appears everywhere in the shot with a mimic effect as they are being copied.
Placements of the title credits (Are they integrated and part of the image or are the clearly separate from the image:
The placement of title credits are integrated into the moving image in an empty space where the colour contrasts with the background so it's readable.
