From 2013 to 2014 the most popular genres at the UK box office is animation at number 1, at action number 2, and comedy being third most successful.
Animation films in total had grossed £246,600,000 and released 33 films. The most successful film in the animation genre was Despicable Me 2. Action films in total had grossed £215,400,000 and released 47 films. The most successful film in the Action genre was Iron man 3. Comedy films in total had grossed £158,200,000 and released 153 films. The most successful film in the comedy genre was The Hangover part III.
From 2013 to 2014 the least popular genres at the UK box office is war at number 1, documentary at number 2, and romance being third most successful.
War films in total had grossed £300,000 and released 5 films. The most successful film in the war genre was Lore. Documentary films in total had grossed £10,700,000 and released 89 films. The most successful film in the Documentary genre was One Direction: This is us. Romance films in total had grossed £13,900,000 and released 34 films. The most successful film in the Romance genre was I give it a year.
In the year 2013 to 2014 comedy released the most films with 153 films and 21.9% of all releases in the UK box office. Animation released only 4.7% of all releases in the UK box office with 33 films released. Action released 6.7% of all releases in the UK box office with 47 films.
The fact that animation and action were the top two genres in the UK box office but had only released a small percentage of all the releases in the year shows that the time that goes into the production of those films in post-production is significantly longer than other genres such as comedy and drama that doesn’t require as much animation or special effects.
15-24 years olds were the biggest amount of cinema admissions In UK box offices with 33%. The Hangover part III was the most successful film with the age group.
Over 50’s found the film Quartet the most popular film. The genre of Quartet is a Drama and it has a sub-genre of comedy.
Action films were most popular with males 69% of those who watched Captain Phillips were male with only 31% female.
Documentary films were most popular with females with 85% of those who watched One Direction: This is us.
The three films that was most popular with the age group of 7-14 was Wreck-it Ralph, Despicable me 2 and One Direction: This is us. This shows that the age group prefers animation and family themed films.
