COSTUMES
Film characters with memorable costumes/ make up...

Edwards Scissorhands
Edward- This character has a pale painted face to seem more inhumane and lifeless. There's faded but noticeable scars across his face to show he's cut himself multiple times. His hair is a mess showing how he cant take care of it and no one has helped him. His scissor hands highlight who the actual character is and what he's known for that makes him stand out. He wears an all leather outfit that has various metal shapes on it.

The Dark Knight
The Joker- Make-up is the highlight of how the character stands out. His red smeared smiley lipstick gives an impression of a clown. His face is also painted all white and then his eyes are surrounded by dark black circles giving an evil/ scary look. Normally wears dark suits. His hair looks a greeny blonde colour.

Fantastic 4
Ben Grimm- Wears a mask to fit the look of his body suit. Easy to identify from the light shade of orange he is. The cracks give a molten rock effect. Often just wears pants with no shoes showing how big he is to fit in peoples clothes making him seem more unique compared to the other members which makes him feel more singled out.

Style a Character
Skeleton- Baby skeleton who gets lost and can't find his way back home on the night of Halloween. In a title sequence- The child would be with its family then suddenly a creature distracts it and the baby walks off. They would be a hero in some situations when they get lost but then would be the person in trouble in need of help. He would be a member of the other skeletons in the town.

Planning Costumes ideas for our Title Sequence
Main Character-Killer

Wears dark clothes to give a mysterious and dark evil effect. Mask is to not give away identity. Gloves would be shown when character is sharpening weapons, also shows how he doesn't give away anything with finger prints.

Props

- Computer- Would be used in the killer's bedroom at the beginning of the title sequence to show how the killer searches up his victims and his obsession within searching up innocent teen girls online.

- Collection of victims images- Would also be shown at the beginning along with the computer shots. These images would be shown on the killer's bedroom wall. Most would have crossed out x's on them to show how the girl in the pictures have been eliminated. Would get it from printed out images of friends etc.

- Knife- Would be shown when the killer is in the car sharpening his knife as if he's ready to kill the girl when he sees her. Would get it from the kitchen.

- Knife Cloth- Would be used when the killer is wiping/cleaning his knife to show how he's getting ready giving the audience an idea of how he kills his victims. Would get it from the kitchen.

- Phone- Used when main character has multiple miss calls from her mother and text telling her to leave. Can get it from someone personal belongings. This would be seen when the main character is in the house showing that she should leave however she is by herself.

BriefFilm Idea-

Our initial plot/storyline ideas were based on a serial killer having a strange obsession within kidnapping young teenage girls. So our idea was to first to show where the killer lives (his bedroom) with pictures of eliminated girls then the picture of the main girl that is going to be killed. And because he has an obsession of stalking these girls we will seem him typing up her name on Facebook to see where she will be. There then be a shot of a different location of where there is a party and the main character which is a young teenage girl is checking her phone which reveals worrying texts from her mother and multiple miss calls showing that is somewhere where she is not supposed to be. This leads on to the girl deciding to leave and go home. There is then a cut in shots where the killer is getting ready by wiping his knife showing that there will be violence. The end shot will then be the killer putting his hand on the victims shoulder to show that he's caught his target easily.

Key Props-
The pair of heels for the main character to make noise on the empty streets. The black gloves for the killer as he types on the keyboard along with the images of the teenager girls to show his obsession. The bottle for the drunken friend to show how reckless she is and her lifestyle for her to lock her friend out the house. The scarf for when it's the only thing left from the main character on the empty street.

Locations-
A flat or a house and streets around the flat/ house.

Setting-
Isolated streets, Bedroom, outside house/flat where door is shown.
Costume-
Cusual clothes for the girls coming out the party(main character and friend). Killer has all black dark outfit.

Lighting-
Use of dark lighting when in the killers bedroom then use of street lamps for when filming outside.

PLANNING- Outline for title sequence

For our title sequence we decided for the genre to be a Thriller-Horror but more towards the thriller side. This is because we wanted the opening to seem more tense with more excitement. We wanted this effect in order for the audience to want to know what would happen next with a sense of foreboding. It would also keep the audience interested to keep on watching.                                                                                                                                            Our initial plot/storyline ideas were based on a serial killer having a strange obsession within kidnapping young teenage girls. So our idea was to first to show where the killer lives (his bedroom) with pictures of eliminated girls then the picture of the main girl that is going to be killed. Thinking about sound for our opening.-Elijah

Thinking about sound for our opening.

We have made a plan for what is going to be and have thought about how we are going to present that to the audience visually and we have now decided to look in depth about how we can use sound to clearly display the atmosphere of the opening. We have to think about the score and sound effects we are going to use in the opening to really strongly address the genre of opening. As importantly we must careful think about all of the foley sound needed for the opening to suspend disbelief of the audience and keep them engaged with the narrative that we are going to establish.

As a group we are looking to add a score that it's intense which will crescendo throughout the opening growing in volume and pace this will create tension and create a dark scary tone for the opening and will complement the narrative of the opening with the tension growing as the psychopath killer following his next victim. During the score we want the audience to feel the tension of the piece and suspect the impending doom of the girl that walks down the street.

We also want to build tension with the foley sound that we are planning on using in opening with the combination of this sounds as the scene goes on we also want to make sure these sounds grow louder as the opening goes on. We don't want to use a large amount of music within the opening as the silence of the opening will add tension to it and an overload of sound wouldn't sound professional.

Non-diegetic
Diegetic
The sound of a heart beating.
The sound of the keyboard typing and the clicks of the mouse and the computer running whilst in the man’s room.
Tense slow, high pitched music to build up tension.
The sound of the clock ticking whilst in the man’s room.
Impact noises/sound effects when titles enter.
The closing of the door when the man is leaving his room to the party.
The sound of the man breathing when the man is following the girl.
Muffled sound of music and talking from the party when we cut from the man’s room to the outside of the house where the party is being made.
The footsteps of the man and girl when the girl is being followed.
Background sound of the street when the girl and man is on the street.
The sharpening of his knife within the man’s bedroom.
Our foley sounds which we are planning on using are the sound of the keyboard and the scrolling and clicking of the mouse and all other sounds that are within the scene. Foley sounds are going to be vital in our opening as they will be the majority of the sound in the opening as music and sound effects are harder to generate and we are planning on creating a stillness and silence within the opening to create tension.

The sound effects which we are planning on using are some impact sound when a title enters the opening to heighten the movement and transition of the titles within the opening

The type of score we are planning on using is a score that is high pitched to give the audience a chill and set a scary atmosphere. We are not planning to use a lot of music during our opening just a low playing piece that will give a sense of stillness and give creepy feeling towards the audience.

RESEARCH-Analysis of Terrified

Analysis of Terrified

The first film, specifically from the horror genre, that I analysed was Terrified.

Micro analysis.

The first shot of the film opening is a wide shot of the setting of the town. The lighting of the shot is very dark and dingy with a little singular light that reveals the buildings. There is the sound of crickets and a rustling sound which increases the tension. The camera then pans from right to left revealing more of the street. About halfway through the pan we hear a distance screams of what seemed to be a woman or a very high pitched man. The first shot slowly panning of the street comes to and end when it fades to black into the next shot. The next shot is a wide shot again in a graveyard the lighting is still dark within this shot. In the graveyard shot there are howls and more predominate. The camera again pans so we see the entirety of the graveyard. The next shot is still within the graveyard but is a high angle long shot of an open grave. The open grave has a person within in it that is still alive and is struggling. There is then a laugh and we move in to the next shot with a simple normal jump cut of a dark figure. The dark figure is unidentifiable but it looks like a man. The next shot is then a new angle of the same open grave shot this time a masked figure is seen filling the grave with some sort of mixture from a cement mixer so it’s implied to be cement. During the filling of the grave we hear some dialogue between the two characters. The character in the grave asked the masked man who he is and he replies with you know who I am and continues to laugh as the grave is being filled.

Macro analysis.

The key plot introduced by the title sequence is the man we see in the grave being buried alive by the masked man which we suspect is some sort of revenge due to the context of the dialogue exchange between the two characters. We are first introduced to the street which sets the setting but probably more importantly the mood of the opening which instantly and effectively establishes the genre of the film. We are introduced to two characters in the opening the masked man and the man in the grave not much is revealed by these two characters about their significance within the film though it is clear that it seems like the masked man is going to be the character creating the horror within this film.

analyse 3 title sequences.

zodiac, is an example of a thriller.  The title sequence used, is a title sequence over moving images.
macro analysis:
During the title sequence we are introduced to some of the main characters in the movie.  The first character we are introduced to is Jake Gyllenhaal, (Robert Gaysmith), who is the main character.  The characters are shown in their working place, during the title sequence.  They are shown in a cartoon production company, which suggests that they are working class people.  We are therefore introduced to the (characters) and the (social class), however, we are not introduced to the story line of the movie.
micro analysis:
Right at the beginning of the title sequence we are shown a long shot of San Francisco, the long shot of the city suggests that this is where the movie will be set.  There is then a cross cut from the long shot of the city, to Jake Gyllenhaal, which suggests that he is the main character.  There is also another cross cut between a shot of the characters cartoon work, to a shot of his workplace, which suggests that he works for a cartoon production company.  The music used is very fast drum-roll which suggests the movie is fast toned.

the order of the title credits:
The first name we see in the title sequence is "David Fincher", who is the director of the movie.
After the director we see the names of the main characters "Jake Gyllenhaal", "Mark Ruffalo" and "Robert Downey".  We then see the main title of the movie "Zodiac".

PRACTICAL REMAKE ACTIVITY- Evidence of filming

what is genre?

Genre is a style or category of art, music or literature.  Examples of genres include

  • mystery
  • thriller
  • comedy
  • adventure
  • Scifi
  • romance
  • western
  • action
  • crime
  • horror
  • romantic comedy
My favorite genre is "thriller".  Examples of thriller movies include:

taken

Taken is a thriller movie starring Liam Neeson.  It is obvious from this movie image, that this movie is a thriller.  The fact that Liam Neeson is aggressively, holding a picture of his daughter, right in front of the mans face gives away the genre.  Both characters look sweaty and exhausted, which suggests there has been some sort of interrogation.

This image from one of the best scenes in the movie taken, is one of the many reasons why i like the thriller genre.  A thriller is a genre that puts the audience on the edge of their seats, and makes them keep wondering what will happen next, and whatever happens, you can not stop watching.  During this scene Liam Neeson wants the man to confess, if he has seen his daughter.  He has the man tied up to a chair, with a piece of cloth in his mouth, and this makes the scene thrill-full.  The audience are waiting, and will keep waiting, until they find out where his daughter is, and whether or not she is alive.  The thriller, makes the realism of the movie so powerful, to the point where the audience forget that this is just a movie.  This realism of events is what I find so powerful about the thriller genre

prisoners
.

Prisoners is another example of a strong thriller movie.  This scene shows Hugh Jackman holding a hammer over the hands of the character, Alex Jones.  Again this shows that there is interrogation, as there usually is in most thriller movies.  It also shows that Hugh Jackman is not waiting for the police to find his daughter, he is taking matters into his own hands, with the help of a friend.  The movie "prisoners"is the reason why I like the thriller genre.  Especially this scene, the father of the kidnapped girl, is doing anything he can do, to find out where his daughter is, to the extent where he is actually thinking about smashing the suspects hands with a hammer.  It makes the audience wonder whether they would do the same, or whether they would leave it for the police to investigate, until it is to late.  The desperation of the father, to find his daughter, makes the realism of the movie so strong.
The characters face, shows the father has done all that is within his power, to get the suspect to confess.  The blood and gruesomeness, adds a hint of horror, to the thriller genre.  His face also shows how desperate the father is to get his daughter back, it also shows that he has taken matters into his own hands, rather than waiting for the police to deal with i==
